R.I.P. Dell Adamo XPS, You Died Too Young

We thought the Dell Adamo XPS to be a truly beautiful creation, an innovative challenger that one-upped the MacBook Air. It had potential.

We’re truly sad to hear of its passing.

The Adamo XPS, a super portable spinoff from the original, hefty Adamo, was the most design-aggressive member of the Dell product family. It was a statement of what the company could do when it focused on form. And more importantly, it was different from anything else, not only that Dell produced, but that ANYONE produced. The Adamo XPS was unique. And uniqueness is a rare commodity in an industry that’s divided between Macbook clones and plastic PCs with so little grey in between.

We’re heartbroken to say farewell to the Adamo XPS and we hope that a new generation will be revealed at some point in the future. In the meantime:

Rest in Peace

Apple Sets April 3 for iPad Debut

Apple Inc. said the iPad will hit stores next month, a few days later than expected but not enough to rattle investors eager to see how consumers respond to the new device.

The Cupertino, Calif., company said it will first begin selling a version of the iPad that uses Wi-Fi to access the Internet on April 3 in the U.S., while a model that also gets online through wireless carriers’ high-speed 3G networks will go on sale later that month.

Apple’s announcement that iPad pre-orders start on March 12th sent the stock up. The Digits panel discusses how Apple’s stock performed, as compared to when the iPhone launched.

Apple will begin taking orders for the iPad from U.S. customers on its Web site March 12.

Apple has said AT&T Inc., its domestic-carrier partner for the iPhone, will supply the 3G wireless service for the iPad in the U.S. But an AT&T spokesman said the iPad won’t be sold in AT&T stores.

Customers in Australia, France, Germany, Japan and other countries will be able to buy the iPad in late April.

When it introduced the iPad in January, Apple said the product would be available in late March. Recently, an analyst report suggested Apple had encountered some production glitches that might delay the release of the iPad and limit quantities of the device that are initially available.

Apple’s announcement that the iPad will come out in early April seemed to reassure investors, sending the company’s shares up $8.24, or 3.9%, to $218.95 on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Friday.

“Production issues, in my mind, are not days or a week in time,” said Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray. “Production issues are when things slip by weeks. So I almost see this date as confirmation that there weren’t production delays, and it doesn’t impact any of our numbers.”

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

It is unclear how many iPad units Apple will have available at launch and whether the introduction will turn into the kind of event that occurred when iPhones first went on sale nearly three years ago, which saw long lines of customers forming in front of stores before it went on sale.

The tablet-shaped iPad, with a large touch-sensing screen for navigating the Internet, watching videos and reading electronic books, is trying to define a new category of technology devices with uncertain market potential, while the iPhone was able to tap into a huge audience of existing cellphone customers.

The iPad, which will come in models priced between $499 and $829, has a 9.7-inch screen, no keyboard and a wireless Internet connection. It is geared for navigating the Web and running software applications that are created by others.

One factor that will affect sales of the iPad is how broadly it will be available in stores.Apple said Friday the iPad will be available for sale through its own retail stores and through Apple retail partners it didn’t name. At an investor conference, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook recently singled out Best Buy Co. as an example of a retail partner likely to carry the iPad.

Porsche reveals 911 Hybrid - The time is right

Porsche revealed images late Wednesday of its first hybrid sports car, a track car it plans to unveil at the Geneva Motor show next month.
While you won’t be able to park this car in your driveway — it’s a race car intended for LeMans endurance racing — it is based on the same production 911 you can buy today. A future 911 hybrid for public consumption is “open for discussion,” a Porsche spokesman said.

A couple of years ago, Porsche executives were saying that a hybrid Porsche sports car was a long shot, at best.

Porsche has long been working on hybrids, just not sports cars. Hybrid versions of its SUV and its new four-door car are on the way.

Sports cars are a bigger challenge though. The added hardware required by a hybrid threatens to bog down a sports car and upset its critical weight balance.

But some technological advances have made this car possible, Porsche says. Still, a deeper look into GT3 R hybrid reveals a car that’s strictly for the professional driver.

Ortery has launched a new office machine called ‘Photosimile’ or what it claims to be the world’s first 3D product photography machine.

Photosimile is effectively a photocopier that creates virtual 3D replicas of whatever small artifact you like. Or animal (providing they sit still while the machine spins them around 360 degrees, that is!).

Ortery’s Photosimile 5000 system a PC-controlled desktop photography studio comprising a light box, a DSLR camera, an automated camera positioning device and dedicated workflow software.

Ortery’s new desktop studio systems allow you to create professional-looking product photos for use online (as 3D animations, if you so wish) or in print.

The Photosimile 5000 software does all the work for you - controlling the studio, camera location, turntable movement, camera settings, picture taking, and post processing.

Pop your shoe (or whatever you like, really) into the light box and let the Photosimile software do the rest.

Save 3D animations in Silverlight

Ortery’s system makes use of four daylight bulbs providing 6500K illumination, a Canon DSLR mounted on a mechanical track, an Ortery turntable and can shoot up to 72 pictures per 360-degree rotation, from zero through to 90 degrees.

Your pics can then be saved as GIF or Flash files or converted into 3D Microsoft Silverlight animations using Ortery’s Real3D format.

Ortery’s Photosimile 5000 is now shipping at a cost of around US$17000 (£10550).
